CHICKPEAS
Chick Peas were first grown in Turkey 7450 BC. The main types are desi small size darker colour and kabuli bigger size cream colour.
Total world production of chickpeas is about 9.000.000 MT. The main producer being India and this amount constitutes 15 pct of world's pulses production.
The major importers are Spain, Algeria, Libya, Lebanon, Egypt, Iraq, Tunis, Usa.
Major exporters Turkey, Canada, Syria, Mexico
Although chick peas specifications are differently emphasized in different countries, the most popular worldwide accepted kabuli specifications are as follows:
Size : 7 mm, 8 mm, 9 mm, 10 mm, 12 mm diameter
Undersize : 10-15 pct passing under the sieve
Admixture : 0,5 - 1 pct
Packing : 50 kg or 100 lb gunny or polypropylene woven bags
Fumigation : 48 g / cu mt methyl bromide
Moisture : 12 - 14 pct
Broken Kernels : 1 - 2 pct
Damaged Kernels : 1 - 3 pct
Discolourd Kernels : 2- 3 pct
% 100 free from live weevils and weevil attacked chick peas.
